Christian Furrer was 1 February 2024 appointed Associate Professor in Actuarial Mathematics at the Department of Mathematical Sciences.

Christian Furrer

“It is impressive that Christian Furrer has performed very well on all six UCPH merit criteria for associate professors”, says Professor Michael Sørensen.

“In particular, he has demonstrated both depth, originality and high productivity in research, he is an excellent and highly engaged teacher and has devoted considerable time to developing study programmes at the department. Moreover, he is deeply involved in industrial collaboration and has shown an aptitude for communicating science to the broader public. Finally, Christian has been very active in formal and informal fora at the department and has contributed to the good and friendly working environment at the department”, says Michael Sørensen.

Christian has a BSc and a MSc in Actuarial Mathematics from this Department. In 2020 he finished an industrial PhD project, within Innovation Fund Denmark's program and with PFA Pension and the University of Copenhagen as partners. His main supervisor was Professor Mogens Steffensen and the title of his PhD thesis was Multi-state Modeling in the Mathematics of Life Insurance.

He has since October 2020 worked at the Department as a Tenure Track Assistant Professor. Starting in 2021 he has been involved in InterAct, a project frame for a range of research and (continuing) education activities of high market proximity in actuarial mathematics and related fields.

In his research, Christian develops new mathematical and statistical methods for risks, especially targeted applications in life, health, and disability insurance. His area of expertise is multi-state modeling, especially non-Markov models.

Christian aims at building bridges between academia and practice, an effort for which he was awarded the 2019 Gauss Prize, from the German Society for Insurance and Financial Mathematics and the German Association of Actuaries. Furthermore, he is very interested in the strategic dimensions of university-based actuarial education and represents the Danish Society of Actuaries in the Education Committees of the Actuarial Association of Europe and the International Actuarial Association.

You can still meet Christian in the office 04.3.22A.
