Francesco Freni, PhD student

Newly employed

Francesco started in November 2025 as a PhD student in the department’s section for Statistics and Probability Theory.

Francesco Freni

Francesco is originally from Italy and studied statistics at the University of Padova for his bachelor's degree and at ETH Zurich (Switzerland) for his master's degree.

“I have worked on applications of statistics and machine learning to problems in astrophysics and later shifted my focus to causality and distribution generalisation. For my master's thesis and later as a research assistant, I developed a method that is robust to changes in data distributions,” says Francesco.

“In my PhD, I will study the concept of verification in causal graphical models, which serves as the counterpart to identification: while identification consists in deriving a formula for a causal effect from a given graph, verification involves determining whether a candidate formula indeed identifies the specified causal effect”.

Francesco will work at the Copenhagen Causality Lab under the supervision of Sebastian Weichwald.
