Title: Experimenting with polytopes and getting it exactly right

Nonlinear optimization has become a useful tool that can also be applied in discrete geometry. We will show how these optimization techniques can be used to tackle the classification of some families of polytopes, namely simplicial polytopes and neighborly polytopes with few vertices in low dimension. Another aspect of the talk will be a heuristic method to turn a numerical approximate solution to a nonlinear system of equations into an exact solution.
