Data-driven decisions in the container logistics industry

Seminar in Insurance and Economics

SPEAKER: Klaus K. Holst (Mærsk).

TITLE: Data-driven decisions in the container logistics industry.

ABSTRACT: Container logistics is playing a crucial role in world trading with up to 90% of the trade at some point getting transported by sea. Maersk is one of the world's largest container shipping companies and is going through major transformations to support the recent strategy of becoming a global integrator of logistics and ambitious plans for becoming carbon-neutral by 2040. An important component to achieve these goals is to improve both strategic and operational decisions with data-driven methods. In the first part of the talk, I will present a range of problems Maersk is trying to solve, which often requires multidisciplinary skills in computer science, statistics, and operational research. Targeted learning is becoming an increasingly important tool to solve some of these problems. In the second part, I will present some of the developments in this area and some of the generic implementations that have been developed at Maersk for causal inference and policy learning.
