Title: Prime II_1 factors arising from "higher rank" groups

Abstract: We show that any II_1 factor associated to an irreducible lattice in a product of connected non-compact rank one simple Lie groups with finite center is prime. This is based on a joint work with Daniel Hoff and Adrian Ioana. We continue by showing that any measure preserving separately ergodic action of a product of hyperbolic or free product groups gives rise to a prime II_1 factor. Finally, we will present unique prime factorization results associated to such von Neumann algebras.
