Title: An introduction to mapping class groups

Abstract: This is a brief introduction to the mapping class group of a surface.  One of the main goals is to give a description of the Nielsen-Thurston classification of mapping classes.

These talks are a preface to Jing Tao's talk at the Groups and Operator Algebras Seminar.
