Title: Diagonal complements of manifolds

Abstract: I will explain two seemingly different ways how to extract the trace of Wall's finiteness obstruction of a manifold from the complement of the diagonal. I will then discuss similar formulas for the trace of Whitehead torsion. This is based on joint works with John Klein and Pavel Safronov.
