Hannah Friedman from UC Berkeley will give the following talk.
Title: Metric Algebraic Geometry of Grassmannians
Abstract: I will give a brief introduction to the field of metric algebraic geometry. We will then see how algebro-geometric methods can help us solve optimization problems on the Grassmannian by looking at three sample optimization problems from statistics and linear algebra. This is based on joint work with Karel Devriendt, Serkan Hoşten, Bernhard Reinke, Andrea Rosana, and Bernd Sturmfels.
