Stability in Group Theory and Operator Algebras

Stability of group relations has the following general form: Given ε>0, is there δ>0 so that whenever some generators satisfy the relations up to δ, they may be replaced by generators satisfying the relations exactly, each perturbed no more than ε from the original? Such questions have been carefully studied in several areas of mathematics with different objects and different notions of distance, and with somewhat different answers for the same group in the different arenas of study, but with many common traits as well.

We aim to bring together researchers from relevant active areas studying stability from different viewpoints to share methods and ideas that are transferable, and to understand better why other methods and ideas are not.
