Inaugural lecture by Søren Galatius

Lecture

Professor of topology Søren Galatius will give his inaugural lecture at Department of Mathematical Sciences Friday 27 May 2016 at 15:00, followed by a reception.

The lecture takes place in HC Ørsted Instituttet’s Auditorium 4, while the reception take place in the lunch room on the 4th floor in the E-building (4.04.19).

Søren Galatius will talk about “The infinitesimal structure of representation varieties".

The Department of Mathematical Sciences is looking forward to Sørens collaboration with Niels Bohr Professor Lars Hesselholt on the interface between algebraic topology, arithmetic geometry and number theory. The recent interaction between these three previously separate research fields are on track to develop into a new "hot" area of research in international mathematics.

Søren GalatiusSøren earned his PhD from Aarhus University in 2004 under the supervision of Ib Madsen. He joined the Stanford faculty in that year, first with a temporary position as a Szegő Assistant Professor and then two years later with a tenure-track position, eventually becoming full professor in 2011.

Søren is 39 years old and is reckoned – together with American Jacob Lurie (Harvard) - as his generation's most talented mathematician in the algebraic topological field.

Søren has received several prestigious grants and awards, including a Clay Research Fellowship and a silver medal from the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences and Letters in 2010. He was an invited lecturer at the European Congress of Mathematicians, Amsterdam 2008, and at the International Congress of Mathematicians, South Korea 2014, which is considered a great honor in international mathematics.
