**Course description**for Mat 3NA in danish and english.**Note:**The "Total" scedule for 3NA is unchanged, but the lectures and the exercises has been switched, and the rooms have been changed as of 19th of August.

We (unfortunately) now have 2 auditoriums and**in the first couple of weeks lectures and exercises will be interchanged as I (JH) see fit:-) See the preliminary plan above.**- Additional course description for Mat 3NA in english:
**Lecturer:**Jens Hugger, tlf. 35 32 06 84, rum E410, e-mail: hugger@math.ku.dk

**Lectures:**Thursday 9-11 in Rockefeller Auditorium.

**Instructor:**Mogens Esrom Larsen, e-mail: mel@math.ku.dk

**Exercises:**Wednesday 10-12 in Aud. 8.

**Exercise times may occationally be used for lectures (and the other way around).**For details see the preliminary plan for Mat3NA, fall 2004.

**Teaching period:**30th August - 17. December 2004. Exercises start in week 37.

**Book:**Susanne C. Brenner, L. Ridgway Scott.: The Mathematical Theory of Finite Element Methods, Second edition, Springer. TAM15.

**Other material:**Possibly some articles/notes (not yet determined).

**Examination:**The course is graded on the danish 13 scale, with the grade based solely on a 3 hour written test given on the 6th January 2005. The exam is open book, but programmable pocket calculators/computers are not allowed.**To be allowed to take the exam, you must first pass the mandatory problems/projects during the semester.**

**Curriculum [Pensum] for Mat 3NA E-2004:**

Existence and uniqueness of solution to variational formulations of elliptic boundary value problems.

Convergence of and a priori error estimation for finite element discretizations of the above.

A posteriori error estimation for the finite element method.

This curriculum is covered by

Brenner - Scott. The mathematical theory of finite element methods Ch. 0-5 + 9-10, plus notes, articles and other literature used in the course.

More details to follow near the end of the course.

**New:Details about the exam January 2005 in**PS, PDF. **Directions for projects**in English and in Danish.**After hour access to terminal rooms**requires a valid "studiekort" and (maybe, but I don't think so any more) this card to be signed and stamped.**Old Mat 3NA "Finite Element" exams.**Jan.1998: DK-ps, DK-pdf.
