We write [x]^ω for the set of infinite subsets of x, and ω for the natural numbers.
Starting with work of Nash-Williams, Galvin, Prikry, Silver and others in the 1960’s, much has been learnt about the possibility of a colouring π : [ω]^ω → k having an infinite homogeneous set, that is, a b ∈ [ω]^ω with π constant on [b]^ω. The general question involves the Axiom of Choice.
More recently, interest has focussed on the distinction between colourings which are invariant in the sense that when a and b differ only finitely, π(a) = π(b), and other colourings such as the chameleons which have the property that when n ∈ a ∈ [ω]^ω, then π(a\{n}) is not equal to π(a).
There is much to be discovered about the possible relationships between these various colourings and their link with ultrafilters, flutters (to be defined), and barren extensions, which are notions of forcing that add no new sets of ordinals.
Of the results to be presented, several are joint work with Carlos DiPrisco, Marianne Morillon and Christian Delhommé.
