The Picard and Brauer groups of a commutative ring spectrum
R can be interpreted as the first two negative homotopy groups of nonconnective version of the spectrum of units of R. We'll focus on two techniques for computing these negative homotopy groups: if R is connective, then any Azumaya R-algebra is etale locally trivial, and these groups reduce to the etale cohomology of the sheaf of units GL_1; if R is nonconnective, then this probably fails, but nevertheless R often admits interesting finite G-Galois extensions whose group cohomology computes the relative Picard and Brauer groups. This is joint work with B. Antieau and T. Lawson, respectively.
