Factorizable completely positive maps and quantum information theory

This is a lecture in the monthly SYM lecture series. It is expository, and supposed to be accessible to all members of the center.
The class of factorizable completely positive maps (originating in work of C. Anantharaman- Delaroche in von Neumann algebras) has gained particular significance in quantum information theory in connection with the settling (in the negative) of the asymptotic quantum Birkhoff conjecture (AQBC). More precisely, in joint work with Uffe Haagerup we proved that every non-factorizable unital quantum channel (that is, completely positive and trace-preserving map) on M_n(C), where n ≥ 3, provides a counterexample for the conjecture.
We will explain a recently established connection to the Connes embedding problem in terms of a newly formulated asymptotic property of factorizable maps.

The fast track to Löwner's theorem

We give a new and simplified proof of Löwner's theorem that immediately delivers the well known integral formulas for the operator monotone functions defined on the positive half-line without using the theory of analytic functions or the detailed matrix analysis found in Löwner's paper. We then proceed to give canonical representations for the subclasses of operator monotone functions used in quantum information theory. In particular for monotone metrics, (metrically adjusted) skew informations and quantum khi-square divergences.
