PhD stipend at the Department of Mathematical Sciences at the University of Copenhagen
One PhD stipend within operator algebras under the joint supervision of Magdalena Musat and Uffe Haagerup is available. The succesful candidate is expected to work on a project related to von Neumann algebras and applications.
To apply for this stipend you must have received a Master's Degree (or an equivalent degree), or expect to receive such a degree prior to the starting time. The starting time for this stipend is negotiable, but can be no later than the fall of 2010.
The Ph.D. stipends include full tuitions and a salary of approximately 3,150 EUR per month (2008 level) before taxes (approximately 2000 EUR per month after taxes). The stipends run for 3 years.
In order for your application to be given full attention, your application and all supporting documents should be submitted no later than 15 March 2010.
About the Department of Mathematical Sciences
The department has 40 permanent scientific staff members; more than 20 PhD students and 15 postdocs. It has strong research groups in many areas of mathematics, and an active Ph.D, postdoc and visitor's programme. Our building is located 2-3 kilometers from the center of Copenhagen in
an urban setting and next to a large public park. You can find more information about the department on its homepage .
Research Groups
All PhD students at our department must be affiliated with one of our 6 research groups: Algebra and Number Theory, Geometric Analysis and Mathematical Physics, Mathematical and Statistical Methods in Insurance and Economy, Non-commutative Geometry, Statistics and Probability Theory and Topology. This particular stipend will be affiliated with the Non-commutative Geometry group.

To apply for one of the vacant PhD stipends you must fill the online form below, AND you must also before 15 March 2010 send by email to phdapply@math.ku.dk the following:
- CV (max one page)
- Research statement describing your current and future interests (1-2 pages)
- Print-out of obtained grades (from your university degree(s))
Write your name in the subject line, and attach the required documents as pdf files, preferably just one file.
You must list names of 2-3 recommenders, who can write letters of support for you. The recommenders should send their letters (preferable as a pdf document) to the email address phdapply@math.ku.dk stating your name in the subject line. We also need your supporting letters before 15 March 2010.
Interview
Selected applicants may be asked to visit our department for an informal interview . The department will cover all (reasonable) expenses in connection with the interview.
