Email
Email addresses
When you have been issued an account on the Institute's computer system an email address is automatically created for you. If your username is username your email address is username@math.ku.dk. You can create an alias (alternative address) and forwarding under emailsettings in the menu to the left.
Webmail
The Institute has a webmail system so you can read your email in a web browser like Firefox, Opera or Internet Explorer. You can access the web mail at https://mail.math.ku.dk/ and use it to read your mail from anywhere in the world.
Configuration
To configure a traditional email client like Thunderbird or Outlook you'll need the following information:
To read your mail you must create an IMAP account in your mail client. The server's name is mail.math.ku.dk and you must use an encrypted connection (TLS). If you can't find a TLS setting (this might be the case in Outlook) then try to activate SSL or anything else referring to a "secure connection". You must also authenticate with your username and password. Certain programs like Thunderbird and Outlook configured on an office pc (not laptop) can be set to do "secure authentication" so you won't have to enter your username and password.
If you use Thunderbird you should set it to compact folders automatically. Select Edit -> Preferences -> Advanced -> Offline & Disc Space and tick "Compact folders when it will save over 100 kB". You should also consider emptying your Deleted (Trash) folder when you close Thunderbird. Then you don't have to do it manually and it won't grow large. In "Account Settings" (in the Edit menu) select "Server Settings" and tick "Empty Deleted folder on Exit".
If you want to send mail through the Institute's server you must again use the server mail.math.ku.dk and use an encrypted connection (TLS) together with authentication with your username and password. You should also set your mail client to use port 587 (the default is 25). If you are configuring an office pc which will never leave the Institute (ie. not a laptop) you don't need to authenticate or change the port number.
