Getting to Denmark/Copenhagen

Copenhagen is served by Copenhagen Airport (CPH). For a list of all flights to Copenhagen Airport, see their website, in particular their travel planner and route maps. Airlines serving Copenhagen include: Scandinavian, AirBerlin , and Sterling. For train/bus connections within Denmark use Rejseplanen (Route Planner). For train connections within Europe try the German railways Die Bahn.

Getting to the Department of Mathematical Sciences and hotels from the airport

Getting to the Department of Mathematical Sciences and the hotels from Copenhagen Airport is easily done by public transportation. The Metro runs directly to central Copenhagen. Most of our hotels are located near Nørreport Station, and the Department of Mathematical Sciences (located in the campus called Universitetsparken/H.C.Ørsted Institute/HCØ) is easily reached from Nørreport Station by bus. The details are given below.

Metro from Copenhagen Airport to Nørreport Station: The metro stop is in the airport terminal, straight ahead from where you exit through customs. Please look for the "M". The Metro departs from the airport every 4-6 minutes, and runs directly to Nørreport Station in about 15 minutes. Information boards onboard announces the name of the station for each stop. (Note: If you are going to "Hotel CabInn Scandinavia" you want to get off at the metro stop "Forum" instead, it's the stop after Nørreport. If you are going to Hotel "9 Små hjem", please see below, since you may want to take the train instead, which also departs from the airport terminal.) You need to buy a ticket in the airport terminal (or any kiosk) before boarding the Metro, or you risk a fine. There are ticket vending machines and a ticket booth in the airport terminal on the way to the metro stop. You need a 3 zones ticket for anywhere in the city centre, which will be valid 1.5 hours. (10 journey rebate cards are offered at favorable rates; See Tickets for public transportation below.)

If you arrive by Inter-City train to Copenhagen, your end stop will usually be the central station København H. Take one of the very frequent local trains further to Nørreport station (2 stops by S-train), and follow the directions from there (your inter-city ticket is valid for this as well).

From Nørreport Station to Universitetsparken/HCØ There are many busses: First locate the bus stop, which is on the centre isle of the main road "Nørre Voldgade" on top of the underground "S-train" station, next to where you exit the metro (ask if you don't see it). Take bus no.: 42, 43, 184, 185, or 150S. Nørreport is the end stop for these buses, so there is no question of direction. Ask the driver to drop you off at Universitetsparken. The H.C. Ørsted Institute (HCØ) is easily recognised by three tall grey buildings spotted by orange balconies on the opposite side of the street. The entrance to HCØ is on the other side of the building. The Department of Mathematical Sciences is in the cubical building behind the tall grey buildings, away from the street. Zoom in on the map above for details.

A taxi from the airport to the H.C. Ørsted Institute (HCØ) or hotels costs approx 300 DKK (40 EUR). A taxi from Nørreport Station to the H.C. Ørsted Institute or hotels costs <100DKK.

Getting from Nørreport Station to the hotels: See map and addresses above. Ibsens Hotel and Hotel Kong Arthur are <5min walk. Christian IV is a bit further (15min walk; a taxi from Nørreport costs <100DKK). For CabInn Scandinavia you should take the Metro to "Forum" the stop after "Nørreport", which is <5min from CabInn Scandinavia (the walking distance from Nørreport is 10-15 min). For Hotel 9 Små Hjem, it is advantageous to take the train to Østerport Station one stop after Nørreport. Again, see map and addresses above.

Getting to Universitetsparken/HCØ from the Hotels

From Ibsens Hotel or Kong Arthur

By Bus (around 15 min): Go to Nørreport Station at the opposite end from the lakes of the street of Ibsens Hotel. From Nørreport Station, see directions above.

Walking (around 25 min): Leaving Ibsens hotel or Hotel Kong Arthur you go to the lakes (they are at the end of the streets of the hotels). Turn right walk along the lake (the street is called Nørre Søgade) until the first bridge. Then turn left on the bridge. After you cross the bridge you walk on Nørrebrogade until you turn right on Fælledvej. You come to a square (Skt. Hans Torv) where you stay to the left and turn onto Nørre Allé. Walk on the left side of Nørre Allé. At some point there will be a park on the right side of Nørre Allé and University buildings on the left side. You'll notice 3 tall grey buildings with red balconies which are part of Universitetsparken/HCØ. The Department of Mathematical Sciences is in the cubical building behind the tall grey buildings, away from the street. Zoom in on the map above for details.

From CabInn Scandinavia

Walking (around 30 min): Walk along the lakes to the bridge "Dronning Louises Bro", then follow directions described under Ibsens Hotel above.

By Bus (around 30 min): Take the metro (or walk) from Forum Metro Station to Nørreport Station. Then take the busses described above.

From Hotel Christian IV

By Bus: Leaving Hotel Christian IV turn left and walk to Kronprinssegade. Turn left and walk along Kronprinsessegade until Gothersgade. Here you can take bus no 350S direction Husum Torv to Nørreport Station (just one stop) or you can turn right at Gothersgade and walk along it to Nørreport Station (a 5 min. walk.). Now see directions above.

Walking (around 30 min): See map above. Go through Kongens Have (which is labeled "Rosenborg Have" on the map) to Sølvtorvet and follow Sølvgade, then Fredensbro, Fredensgade, Tagensvej and Nørre Allé to HCØ.

From Hotel Rye

Walking (around 15 min): From Hotel Rye walking is best. When you exit the hotel turn right and walk along Ryesgade until Helgesensgade, where you take a right. Cross the big road (Blegdamsvej) and keep walking straight on "Frederik V's vej" (the university hospital "Riget" will be to your left). At the end of "Frederiks V's vej" keep walking straigt through the skateboard park. You are now in front of a big road "Nørre Allé" and the University buildings will be the large buildings on the other side of the road right in front of you.

From 9 Små hjem

Walking (around 20 min): From 9 små hjem walking is best. As you leave the Hotel turn left and walk to the end of the street. Turn right on Østerbrogade and walk to the square called Trianglen. Cross the square and go to the left corner. Continue along Øster Allé (you should have a park, Fælledparken, on your left) until you turn left on Borgmester Jensens Allé. You turn right on the first street, which is Universitetsparken. You can now see the H.C. Ørsted Institute to your left as you cross the intersection.

Tickets for Public Transportation

Please consult the webpages of Movia for more information about tickets and zones.

It is 3 zones from the airport to Copenhagen/the H.C. Ørsted Institute. From the hotels to the H.C. Ørsted Institute it is only 1 zone, but you cannot by tickets for less than 2 zones. Either buy a regular 3 zone ticket, or if you are staying longer buy a yellow (3 zones) or blue (2 zones) multiple-trip ticket ("rabatkort") valid for 10 trips. This has to be stamped before entering the train or in the bus entrance. Stamp a blue ticket twice if your trip is 3 or 4 zones long. If you want to visit some of Copenhagen's attractions you should consider a Copenhagen Card which entitles you to unlimited bus, metro and train travel and gives you discount or free entrance to many major attractions.

Currency

The currency of Denmark is called "kroner" (abbreviated "DKK" or "kr.") and comes in notes of 50, 100, 200, 500 and 1000 kr., and coins of 1, 2, 5, 10 and 20 kr. One DKK is divided into 100 "øre", and there are also coins of 50 øre. If you pay with cash, prices are rounded to the nearest multiple of 50 øre. Currently 100 kr. is equal to 13,42 €, check a currency converter for recent rates or other currencies. An easy way to roughly convert from kr. to € is to add one third and divide that result by 10.
