Tougher requirements for entering the math-programmes

Undergraduate studies

"I am astonished at the development. There's no difference between Actuarial Mathematics and Mathematics-Economics that can justify such different entry requirements", says Ernst Hansen, head of studies at the Department of Mathematical Sciences.

You need a grade-point average of 10.8 on the 12-point grading scale in order to qualify for admission to Actuarial Mathematics. The programme has gone from tenth to sharing sixth place on the Top Ten of UCPH programmes with high entry requirements.

In Mathematics-Economics the entry requirements are now 9.0, while at Mathematics it’s 6.4.

"But the high entry requirements show on overall student performance. The results from first-year students in Actuarial Mathematics and Mathematics-Economics last year were much better than we have seen before, " says Ernst Hansen, adding:

"This year the entry requirements have actually increased in all three mathematics programmes. For the Mathematics programme the quotient is increased by 1.2 - that’s the largest increase at the UCPH. So I assume we will see an improvement in student performance there too," says Ernst Hansen.

50 students will begin Actuarial Mathematics; all of which had the programme as their number one priority. 60 will start at Mathematics-Economics; 56 had it as a first or second priority. Even for Mathematics the numbers are very positive, with 116 choosing the programme as their no. 1 and 40 having it as the second or third priority.

19 minor subject students will also enter the Mathematics programme. Seven of them are curiously enough from Musicology. It is possible that the inspiration for their choice is to be found in high school, where many have tried a math-music-interdisciplinary study project.
