Prize

What is the probability of receiving University of Copenhagen’s teaching award 'Harald of the Year'? This year's recipient should be able to answer. He researches and teaches in probability theory.

Every year at the Commemoration, the University of Copenhagen presents an award to one of the University's 5,000 lecturers for good and inspirational teaching. This year, the Teacher of the Year is Assistant Professor Anders Rønn-Nielsen, Department of Mathematical Sciences.

- Anders is an incomparably talented teacher. He teaches probability theory in the theoretical, mathematical way. Still, he manages to hold lectures which are not only interesting and entertaining but engage each of us students, says statistics student Anne Petersen, who along with 31 fellow students nominated Anders Rønn-Nielsen.

Anders Rønn-Nielsen himself is grateful that the students have spent time and effort to nominate him.

- It is important to me that the students discover that probability theory is fun and interesting. But I cannot take the whole credit for the award - the students were so sweet and interested when I taught them. It made it much more fun for me, simply because they took an active part in the teaching and the educational initiatives that I tested, says Anders Rønn-Nielsen.

The teaching award called “Årets Harald” (Harald of the Year) is named after the mathematician Harald Bohr. The winner receives a porcelain owl and DKK 25,000. The Harald of the Year was presented at the annual Commemoration Ceremony on Friday 20 November, 2015.
